But I said nothing at first — I was too lost in thoughts, visions of ultrasounds, doctors, and grief. Because I'm 37 — which is considered an advanced maternal age — I had an ultrasound at eight weeks. I wasn't prepared for the grief of my second miscarriageI learned then that preparation does absolutely nothing to protect you from the devastation you feel in this situation. "Advanced maternal age" kept echoing in my mind — a term that feels like a verdict, a reminder that time is not on my side. Fear of the unknown, fear of the challenges that come with being an older mother, fear of facing another loss.

The History Behind Arizona’s 160-Year-Old Abortion Ban
  + stars: | 2024-04-10 | by ( Pam Belluck | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The 160-year-old Arizona abortion ban that was upheld on Tuesday by the state’s highest court was among a wave of anti-abortion laws propelled by some historical twists and turns that might seem surprising. For decades after the United States became a nation, abortion was legal until fetal movement could be felt, usually well into the second trimester. Before that point, “women could try to obtain an abortion without having to fear that it was illegal,” said Johanna Schoen, a professor of history at Rutgers University. After quickening, abortion providers could be charged with a misdemeanor. “I think what was stigmatized was maybe this idea that you were having sex outside of marriage, but of course, married women also ended their pregnancies.”

CNN —A six-week ban on abortion set to take effect in Florida next month will severely limit abortion access in a state that is one of the country’s most populous and one that has become a key access point amid widespread restrictions in the region. In South Carolina, there was a 70% decrease in abortions just one month after the state enforced a six-week limit. Florida will join Georgia and South Carolina with a six-week ban. “This six-week ban leaves an even narrower window for people to access care, and I think it’s going to be too late for so many. “We plan to remain open and continue to provide abortion care as long as we can,” she said.

In a Thursday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, GE Healthcare CEO Peter Arduini said a lot of his company's research and development efforts are focused on artificial intelligence. Arduini went through several ways AI can enhance health-care workers' productivity, including technology that makes patient data more cohesive. He added that GE Healthcare's R&D investments over the past year created a pipeline of 40 new products that will have a "flywheel effect" on the business. Arduini also reflected on GE Healthcare's first year as an independent company from GE, saying that independence enabled progress. The South Carolina Supreme Court reversed course last summer when it upheld the ban after striking down a similar version. An earlier lawsuit by Planned Parenthood argued that the law violated patients' right to privacy. Susanna Birdsong, a lawyer for Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, responded that abortion providers have had to make that more conservative interpretation because of the “onerous penalties” for noncompliance. Planned Parenthood has stopped providing abortions when “early embryonic electrical activity” is visible by ultrasound, the group wrote in Monday's filing. “We’re righting for every inch of ground in South Carolina," Birdsong said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a new twist to the fight over abortion access, congressional Republicans are trying to block a Biden administration spending rule that they say will cut off millions of dollars to anti-abortion counseling centers. The rule would prohibit states from sending federal funds earmarked for needy Americans to so-called “crisis pregnancy centers,” which counsel against abortions. The proposal limiting funds for anti-abortion counseling centers is the Biden administration's latest attempt to introduce federal policies that expand abortion access. Political Cartoons View All 253 ImagesCongressional Republicans this week introduced legislation that would block the Health and Human Services Agency from restricting the funds from the centers. Thanks to my parents, I was free of undergraduate student loans, so I thought taking on student loans for my master's degree wouldn't be the worst decision. Now, a decade later, I'm still weighed down by my student loans and no longer work in my field of study. Newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson was the bookkeeper for a crisis pregnancy center, IRS forms show. Crisis pregnancy centers have a history of spreading medical misinformation. Crisis pregnancy centers, or pregnancy resource centers, aim to stop people who are pregnant from seeking abortions by promoting adoption and parenting skills. Imagine Life Ministries noted on its website that many women "have never heard of pregnancy centers or the resources offered there." Imagine Life Ministries did not designate itself under that category in any filings since its founding.

CNN —Traditional medical imaging – used to diagnose, monitor or treat certain medical conditions – has long struggled to get clear pictures of patients with dark skin, according to experts. Researchers say they have found a way to improve medical imaging, a process through which physicians can observe the inside of the body, regardless of skin tone. They found that a distortion of the photoacoustic signal that makes the imaging more difficult to read, called clutter, increased with darkness of skin. The applications of photoacoustic technology vary, but with the researchers’ new developments, it may help diagnose health issues more accurately and equitably. We know there’s no basis in the human genome for racial sub-speciation.”This study isn’t the first to find skin color biases in medical technology.

NEW YORK (AP) — Pets provide joy and companionship, but costs can add up quickly, especially if you're a first-time owner and don't know what to expect. Once you get them home, pets need a bed, food, leashes and harnesses and grooming supplies, among other things. Gelber ended up paying a small fraction of those amounts because she had pet insurance, which she got knowing that French bulldogs are prone to getting sick. But Simon, who has had dogs for 25 years, has never gotten pet insurance and has not needed it during that time. Regardless of how much they have spent on their dogs, Chavez, Gelbert and Simon agree they don't regret having them in their lives.

Spiritus has built a novel approach to direct air carbon capture that relies on a material that absorbs carbon dioxide passively. When the lung-like "fruit" have been collected from the carbon "orchard," they will be put in a container, where low heat will be applied to remove the carbon dioxide. That's important because while carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are at record high levels, carbon dioxide is still diluted and makes up a relatively small percentage of the air. That third component — economical — is critical in the direct air carbon capture field, and is part of what drew Khosla Ventures to make its first direct air capture investment in Spiritus. "We're able to remove about 1,000 times more carbon dioxide than a forest can.

The text in one post sharing the claim (here) reads, “A Single Exposure to Ultrasound Causes DNA Damage Similar to 250 Chest X-Rays” overlayed on an ultrasound image of a fetus. A URL printed across the fetus image leads to an article (here) that makes unfounded claims about the risk of fetal ultrasound, and cites a 1981 study for the “250 chest x-rays” figure. The 1981 study did not draw any such conclusion. In response to a request for comment, the author of the article Jeanice Barcelo said she stands by her claim about the 1981 study. A 1981 study of mouse cells in test tubes did not conclude that ultrasound caused DNA damage equivalent to that of hundreds of x-rays, and extensive research finds ultrasound to be safe for use during pregnancy.

Judge Puts South Carolina Abortion Ban on Hold
  + stars: | 2023-05-26 | by ( Ava Sasani | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Why It MattersSouth Carolina has become an important access point for abortion in the South as other states in the region have banned the procedure. BackgroundSouth Carolina legislators struggled for months to come to an agreement on an abortion ban after the Supreme Court last year overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated the national right to abortion. The ban is similar to an earlier six-week ban overturned by the State Supreme Court last year, known as a heartbeat bill, because cardiac activity can be detected around that time. The court ruled that the South Carolina Constitution provides a right to privacy that includes the right to abortion. “While I respect Judge Newman’s decision, I remain convinced that the heartbeat bill is constitutional and that the Supreme Court will agree,” said the Senate’s president, Thomas Alexander, a Republican.
